Sermon Notes

Our road trip with Jesus now takes us to a dinner party where the maneuvering of the status hungry guests prompts Jesus to tell a simple parable that gives precious insight into not only where to sit at a table, where and how to live our lives in light of the Kingdom of God.

  1. Application of Today’s Scripture Passage
    1. We live in a status hungry world filled with self-promotion. Christ-followers should be different.
    2. Self-promotion sets us up for failure
    3. Humbly working hard opens opportunities for success (Proverbs 3:34)
  2. Ultimate Exaltation by God
The greater point of this parable has little to do with advancement in the office or society

    1. The exaltation is from God – He is the host of the party we’re at
      • His exaltation is given to those who humble themselves before Him (James 4: 10)
      • These are the poor in Spirit who received the Kingdom (Matthew 5: 8)
    2. To exalt oneself is to refuse to humble oneself before God
    3. Jesus is God’s means of exaltation
      • Through the cross…
      • We are presently seated with Christ, will receive immeasurable riches of His grace (Ephesians 2: 4-7)
