What are Spiritual Disciplines?

The spiritual disciplines are those practices found in Scripture that promote spiritual growth among believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are habits of devotion, habits of experiential Christianity that have been practiced by God’s people since biblical times.

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” ~ Martin Luther

Characteristics of Spiritual Disciplines

  • Personal/Interpersonal
  • Are activities not Attitudes
  • Bible-based, modeled from Scriptures
  • For growing in Christlikeness
  • Use to take us deeper in Christ
  • Are a means not an end. Result = Godliness

In our 2020 Vision, we targeted this concept of Spiritual Disciplines under the Building Up Pillar as one of the initiatives:

    • Continually equip and encourage every member of the Community of Faith to apply classic spiritual practices to their contemporary lives.

5 Principles in Prayer

  1. In Humility (Zephaniah 2: 3)
  2. In Faith (Mark 11: 240
  3. In accordance with God’s Will (1 John 5: 14)
  4. Others-focused (Ephesians 6: 18)
  5. In the name of Jesus (John 14: 12-14)
