It’s hard to believe we’re wrapping up the Thanksgiving series this Sunday and will then be turning our attention to Advent! This last installment of the “Give Thanks For…” series covers giving thanks for the Word of God.
Scripture Reference
Psalm 119: 9-16
Sermon Notes
Give Thanks for God’s Word which Reveals God, Guards Our Holiness, and Gives Delight
- Give Thanks Because God’s Word Reveals Him to Us
- Seek God diligently in His Word and Find Him (verse 10). Only Scripture reveals God’s nature (Exodus 34) and how to reach Him.
- Scripture teaches what we need for salvation (2 Timothy 3: 14-15). Only Scripture teaches what sin is and shows how we fall short of God’s glory.
- God helps us understand Scripture by the power of His Spirit (verse 12).
- Give Thanks Because God’s Word Guards Our Holiness
- Scripture guards our thoughts (verse 9). It injects the thoughts of God into our thoughts, helping us to think like Him.
- Scripture guards our actions (verse 11). See the way Jesus used Scripture during His temptation. Also 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 – the uses of Scripture to guard and correct our actions in righteousness. Store it up (verse 12).
- Give Thanks Because God’s Word Gives Delight
- Delight in God’s Word (verses 13-14). As we grow to know it more and read it more, we are transformed more and increasingly delight in reading God’s Word. God wants us to delight in Him and reading His love letters to us is critical for that.
- Meditate on it (verse 15). Daily devotion, careful thought and recitation to be equipped.
