Sermon Notes
We continue the road trip to Jerusalem with the extremely familiar story of Jesus’ visit with Martha and Mary, two sisters with very different priorities when the Lord comes to visit. This story immediately follows the parable of the Good Samaritan with its clear command to “Go and Do.” It is no accident that a story about the necessity of sitting at the feet of the Lord as a disciple follows one about doing the work of ministry. These two aspects of genuine discipleship – growing in the presence of Jesus and ministering in the name of jesus must be in balance to keep Christ-followers from becoming burned out or ineffective.
As Christ Followers we need to focus on what matters.
- Martha did good things, but they were distractions
- Martha focused on her responsibilities as hostess
- As Christians, it’s easy to be so focused on the good we’re distracted from Jesus
- Life, ministry, and committee meetings make it easy to lose our connection to Jesus
- We must be intentional to hold on to Him
- Mary did the best thing, focusing on Jesus
- Mary focused on the best – the presence and teaching of Christ
- As Christians, we must choose the good portion – focus on Jesus
- We must gather at His feet as His disciples
- This refreshes and empowers us to “Go and Do”
