Approximately 100 volunteers came out for the "Love Our Neighbor" Local Mission Trip, September 21-23. Our mission field stretched from Old Bridge Road to the Occoquan River and from Harbor Drive to Clipper Drive, including all of the side streets. Through door-to-door personal invitations we reached out to meet some of our neighbors in the community. We worked side-by-side and made new relationships with many neighbors, some who joined us for crafting activities for Operation Christmas Child, some for children's activities, cooking demonstrations, kids sports. And then there was dinner! Twice! On Saturday we invited the community to a cook-out followed by an outdoor movie night (fun for the entire family) and then dinner again on Sunday night, which unfortunately had to be moved indoors due to the weather.
On Saturday, many of our volunteers were assisting community members with home and yard projects. Our Technology Geeks handled a few calls for assistance on computer issues.
The rain Sunday didn't stop us at all. A few activities were moved inside (dinner and the children's activities), but several teams donned rain gear and went out policing grounds around the church and up Clipper Drive. An impromptu painting team was formed and two classrooms at the church now have a new look.
We plan to continue reaching out to the neighborhood over the next year and look forward to planning a 2019 Neighbor Day Weekend.
