Sermon Notes
As we continue on the road with Jesus, He has left the Pharisee’s dinner party behind and is being followed by an eager crowd of fans. Sensing both their excitement and lack of genuine commitment, He challenges them to count the full cost of being His disciples before undertaking a way of life that calls for us to set aside family, property, and life.
- Jesus Calls Us to Determine the TCD (Total Cost of Discipleship)
- Jesus challenges the crowd of fans to carefully weigh the costs of truly following Him before committing (verses 28-30, 31-32)
- Today there are many Christians who have faith in Christ, but are not truly disciples – they remain spiritual milk drinkers (Hebrews 5: 12-14) for many years.
- We are called to MAKE disciples, which means we need to BE disciples, not just people who “like” Jesus
- The Costs of Discipleship are High
- A disciple loves Jesus more than family (verse 26)
- A disciple loves Jesus more than life (verse 27)
- A disciple loves Jesus more than property (verse 33)
Why would we want to pay these costs? Because…
- Jesus Paid the Cost and Gives the Reward to His Disciples
- Jesus Paid the Cost – He Went All In for Us
- His family thought He was crazy and did not believe Him
- He accumulated no wealth, had nowhere to rest His head (Matthew 8: 20)
- He suffered and died on the cross, which we remember in the Lord’s Supper
- Are We All in for Him?
- Once we trust Him, will we be disciples? That’s what He saved us to be
- This is where we experience the fruit of the Spirit and the joy of walking with Him as we become like Him
- Jesus Paid the Cost – He Went All In for Us
