We know the story of Christmas well, but it’s more than an interesting story in isolation – every detail richly connects with God’s great story of the  Bible. The Christmas story is the pivotal moment in God’s great story of love and redemption when the long-anticipated hero appears in town, the downtrodden find hope, and the bad guys sniff, “He doesn’t look so tough.” A mere 33 years later, that baby, now grown up, will utterly defeat the bad guys in the climatic event in human history, but that’s a story for Easter…

  1. The Foresight of God (Bethlehem, verse 4 – Micah 5: 2)
    1. In the beginning, a perfect God created a perfect world, and gave us responsibility to manage it, and of course, we messed it up!
    2. Knowing this would happen, in His great love and foresight, God had a plan
      1. A Savior would come, long prophesied, down to the location in Micah 5: 2
      2. God used the Roman Empire to move the right people to the right place (verses 1-4)
    3. This is the marvelous foresight of God – His love and meticulous planning for all mankind
  2. The Faithfulness of  God (Lineage of David, verse 4 – 2 Samuel 7: 12-13, Isaiah 11: 1-2)
    1. God is faithful to keep all his promises – He is faithful in a faithless world
      1. Including His promise to David 3,000 years ago (2 Samuel 7: 12-13)
      2. Had God failed, when there was no king 2,000 years ago? No, the king was coming – Isaiah 11: 1-2
      3. Jesus is the promised eternal king (verse 4)
    2. He is a king for all who would have Him, a king like no other (Matthew 11: 28-30). This is the faithfulness of  God
  3. The Forgiveness of God (Virgin Birth, verse 5/Luke 1: 26-35 – Isaiah 7: 14)
    1. Jesus was no ordinary baby
      1. The foresight and faithfulness of God – Isaiah 7: 14
      2. Fulfilled 7 centuries later in that babe in the manger (Luke 1: 26-35)
    2. The sinless Son of God
    3. Sent to bear the sins of the world – bringing peace, love, hope, and joy to all who follow Him (Luke 2: 10-14)
