Sermon Notes

This week’s stop on the road to the cross features a lesson on the power of persistent prayer based on a parable about a persistent widow who overcomes the resistance of a terrible judge through her frequent pleas for justice. If even an awful judge will give justice because of persistence, how much more will the glorious and holy God of the universe someday give justice to His people when they pray persistently!

The Parable Demonstrates the Power of Perpetual, Persistent, Positive Prayer for the Priorities and Provision of God

  1. Pray Perpetually
    1. The privilege to pray often – how can we pray at all? (Hebrews 4: 14-16)
    2. The command to pray always – make it a habit and lifestyle (verse 1, 1 Thessalonians 5: 17)
  2. Pray Persistently
    1. Be patient – don’t get discouraged when answers don’t come quickly (verse 1, verse 3, Matthew 7: 7-8)
    2. Be natural, not repetitive (verse 7, Matthew 6: 7-8)
  3. Pray Positively for the Priorities and Provision of God
How are we to pray? Positively – in faith and in kindness (Mark 12:24-25)
What are we to pray for? (Matthew 6: 9-13)

    1. God’s Priorities
      • Praise God (Psalms), His Kingdom Come (verse 8), His Will Be Done (1 John 5: 14-15)
    2. God’s Provision
      • Basic Needs, Forgiveness, Spiritual Protection
      • He will give justice speedily (verse 8)
