Lesson Notes
Verses 13-24
- Two followers of Jesus are heading from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, a journey of about 7 1/2 miles.
- These men had been in Jerusalem during the previous Passover Week and had been a witness to the events leading to and ending with Christ’s crucifixion.
- Joining the two followers on their journey is a resurrected Jesus.
- Through a miracle, they are prevented from recognizing Jesus.
- Jesus inquires about their conversation and sad disposition.
- One of the followers is identified as Cleopas.
- Both followers are astounded that this “stranger” is unaware of the events that took place in Jerusalem over the past several days.
- They explain how their Jewish leaders put Jesus of Nazareth, a “Prophet” to death.
- They had hoped Jesus was the Messiah, who would “redeem” Israel, but He’s been dead for three days.
- However, they explain, His tomb is now empty, and some of Jesus’ women followers claim that angels have told them that Jesus is alvie.
- But, they go on, none of the men saw any of this when they visited the tomb.
Verses 25-35
- Jesus calls these two men “Foolish Ones” and “Slow of heart.”
- Jesus then begins teaching from the Old Testament, showing that it has pointed to the occurrence of ALL of these previous events. (Isaiah 53: 3, 5-9, 11-12)
- When the trio reach Emmaus, Jesus is asked to stay the night.
- After Jesus breaks, blesses, and disperses the bread, He is immediately recognized. He, then, immediately vanishes. (John 6: 30-40)
- The two followers set off for Jerusalem, where they will tell the “Good News” that Jesus has risen.
