Sermon Notes

Our road trip to Jerusalem with Jesus nears its end and he is about to enter Jerusalem at last. The people are abuzz with hope that He is going to bring about the Kingdom of God they have long dreamed of. To help them understand the nature of His kingdom, Jesus teaches them a parable so they would understand He was about to go away for awhile, but that they had work to do in His absence.

God Gives Each Believer One Life – Use it Well!

  1. Jesus Won’t Return Immediately – This Life is a Time of Stewardship
    1. Jesus was going away to be crowned king and will return (verse 12)
    2. Jesus gave resources and responsibilities to His servants (verse 13)
      • Each servant got 1 mina to use for business until He returns
      • We each get the same – one new life in  Christ to use for His business
      • Our life is a stewardship – we don’t own it – it was given by the Master as a trust
  2. Jesus Will Return – Everyone  Will Account for their Life and Be Rewarded
    1. Upon His return as a King, we will show what He gained for Him by our lives (verse 15)
    2. This should be a glorious time – He gives enormous rewards for faithful service (verses 16-19)
    3. If we haven’t used our life well, it won’t be glorious – we’ll regret it bitterly
      • A servant who misunderstands his master’s nature wastes his stewardship (verses 20-26)
      • This matters because of the consequences for those who are not believers (verse 27)
      • Not a loss of salvation, rather a loss of reward (1 Corinthians 3: 11-15)
  3. In Heaven, Our Rewards for This Life Will Be Joyful Responsibilities
    1. Notice the nature of the reward – whatever our role in t his life, it’s responsibility and authority in heaven
